The quiet north end. Quilcene sits where Hood Canal narrows to its tip — the least-visited town on the canal and among the most interesting: an old oyster town with a working marina, a rebranded local restaurant that's become a genuine community hub, and some of the best hiking on the northeastern Olympic Peninsula. Your entry or exit if you're doing the full loop via the Kingston ferry.
Where to Eat
Restaurants & Local Eats
Quilbilly's Restaurant & Taproom (formerly Twana Roadhouse, 294793 US Hwy 101) is the social heart of Quilcene — 12 rotating tap beers and ciders, half-pound burgers with all-natural grass-fed beef, hand-tossed pizzas, house-made pies, and locally sourced greens. Recent reviews praise the fries and friendly service. Gearhead Deli at 294963 Hwy 101 is the spot for a proper sandwich before heading into the mountains — smoked brisket, pulled pork, burgers, and house sides. Tue–Sun 11am–7pm.
Coffee
Coffee Options
Limited in Quilcene. Quilbilly's serves coffee. Port Townsend (25 miles north) has better café options if you're heading that direction — or stock up in Hoodsport before driving the full canal.
What to Do
Views, Oysters & Wilderness
Mount Walker Viewpoint is the best panoramic view of Hood Canal from any overlook — a short drive or 2-mile hike to twin viewpoints, south facing the canal, north facing the Olympics. Outstanding on a clear day. Mount Townsend Trail is a summit hike in the Buckhorn Wilderness with views of the canal, Cascades, and Strait of Juan de Fuca — less trafficked than Mt. Ellinor and highly rewarding. Quilcene Bay is one of the oldest oyster-growing areas in the Pacific Northwest — the public tidelands off Linger Longer Road are open for recreational shellfish harvest (Washington shellfish license required). Quilcene Bay Marina has a quiet working waterfront worth a stop. Quilcene Historical Museum covers the town's oyster and logging heritage — open Fri–Mon 1–5pm, mid-April through mid-September.
Groceries & Essentials
