The southern gateway. Belfair sits at the very bottom of Hood Canal's hook — the start of the canal if you're coming from Seattle via WA-3. It's the most practical town on the water: real grocery stores, a pharmacy, gas stations, and a few genuine local stops of its own. Not a destination in itself, but the launch pad for everything north.

El Sombrero is the Mexican restaurant locals actually go to — solid margaritas, generous portions, straightforward and reliable. Lotus Garden handles Chinese, pho, and udon on WA-3 and is good for a quick, filling meal on arrival or departure. Bent Bine Brew Co. is a local craft brewery at 23297 WA-3 with rotating taps and pub food, open Tue–Sun from 1pm — the best option for a pint before heading up the canal.

Drive-through espresso stands line WA-3 — this is Washington. Hood Canal Coffee is the most local option before you leave town. Otherwise, Belfair has the best coffee infrastructure on the south canal; stock up before heading north toward Hoodsport.
What to Do
Trails, Parks & Scenery
Belfair State Park sits at the southern tip of the canal with tidal flats, a heated saltwater pool (seasonal), and camping — an underused gem that most visitors drive past. Tahuya State Forest offers 84 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding — free to enter, with multiple trailheads off WA-300. Theler Wetlands is a 139-acre estuary preserve at the mouth of the Union River, with 3+ miles of trail through tidal wetland, salt marsh, and forest. Free, no permit needed, and rarely busy. Note: dogs are not permitted on the trails. The North Shore Road scenic drive (WA-300 heading north) follows the canal's north shore and offers views most visitors never see.

Belfair has the best services of any town on Hood Canal: Safeway (full grocery and pharmacy) at 23961 NE State Route 3 is the anchor, along with multiple gas stations on WA-3 and WA-300. If you're heading north, this is the last full grocery stop for miles.

Belfair State Park Cabins (C1–C8) are reservable waterfront cabins with electric heat, bunk beds, and futon — sleeping 5, one pet-friendly. Sunrise Canal Vacation Rental is a waterfront cottage on the north shore with direct beach access, fire pit, and kayaks — one of the more characterful independent rentals in the area. Cloudloft Cabin is a striking A-frame with a modern interior, about 15 minutes from Belfair — a great option when the waterfront spots are booked. The Horizon on Hood Canal is a luxury waterfront home sleeping 6, with a private yard, direct beach access, hot tub, and movie projector setup — the premium pick on the south canal.
